After years of slow progression the Joomla team continue with their new six-month release cycle, the J2.5 Beta1 is out now with the full version set to be available around 10th January 2012.
The Joomla 2.5 Beta1 is not suitable for production sites, but gives us a chance to take a sneak preview of what's to come. Joomla 1.7 will no longer be supported after February 10th, which means all websites will need to be directly upgraded to 2.5 immediately. The process will be pretty straight forward with the new automatic upgrade system introduced in 1.6, however 3rd party extensions already installed will need to be 2.5 supported before it's recommended.
